We watched Steve Jobs' Graduation speech at Stanford (2005) and discussed SPEECH TECHNIQUES.

We started IMPROMPTU speeches.

Speech Day 12 - Wednesday 1-21-15

Today we have Mass then an hour in the library researching for our College/University speech and "Good Speech". Good Speech topics are DUE before you leave the library today.

Hour 2 will be with Lifetime Fitness

Hours 3 and 4 will be Persuasive Speeches...and left over speeches from last week.

Hour 2 we will research in the library researching for GOOD SPEECH and COLLEGE?UNIVERSITY SPEECH. Topics MUST be chosen by the end of today's library time!

Hours 3 and 4 we will be in the classroom. Persuasive Speeches and the rest of last weeks speeches will be on the schedule. Those that have not been videotaped will be taped. Wednesday those that were videotaped will watch themselves!

Good Speech Assignment

What DO YOU consider a good speech?
DUE Friday 1-23-15

Select a speech from a film or TV show that you believe is well done. You will share the clip with the class. What is the format?

Orally:
1. You must “set up the clip” and explain to the class the premise of the movie...let the class know what has happened so they are prepared to understand WHY the speech was given and its impact in the film.
2. Show the clip
3. Conclude with a description of how the speech had an impact on subsequent scenes in the film. Explain how and why the clip you shared was powerful in the film.
4. Explain the speech techniques that were used (make sure to include pathos, logos, and eros).
5. Then share a take away...from this example...what can you take into your life? How can you apply what you watched to your public speaking/listening skills.

We will use the STANDARD RUBRIC for the Oral Presentation

Written:
Your will write an essay that corresponds with what you will say! The written report will be in written voice...not in speaking voice (for example, in your writing you will not write Hello Class).
Your essay will be 500-1000 words. Include the word count after the final word in parenthesis like this (WORD COUNT ______ )
Type this essay in Times New Roman using 12 point font, Double space the document.

Interview an Employee of Saints, it cannot be a teacher/coach that you have had teach/coach you.

Videotape the interview.

Ask the employee questions to get to know THEM. Perhaps ask them about their hobbies, family, favorite foods, what they do on campus, what they do when they are not at work, etc. Make sure the questions are POLITE, PERSONAL (but not invading privacy), and OPEN-ENDED so that the responses must be sentences, not one word answers! Make sure the questions show that you have a genuine interest in getting to know another member of the Saints Community!

You must email the presentation to me or bring it on a FLASH DRIVE by 1-26-14. We will share the BONUS interviews in class, if any were done, the last week of class.

Today those people who were videotaped over the last two days will watch their speech and write a reflection. The second hour we will continue to work on our persuasive speech in the library.

REMINDER...Reading Chapter 10 is important in preparation for this speech!

Today we recited our poems using the microphone. We had an opportunity to continue researching for the persuasive speech.

REMINDER...Persuasive Speech must be in MLA format and include a Powerpoint, Prezi, or Glogster as your "visual". See me if you have questions!!

The last two hours were spent giving speeches and being a good audience!

Speech Day 5 Naviance, Best Food, Persuasive

Day 5 will start in the library with a Naviance training. Our second hour is for completing the Learning Style Inventory, completing a reflection on it, and starting to research for next week's speeches.

The Best Food I Ever Ate


This Speech is meant to get your to express EMOTIONS. You will be THOROUGHLY explaining to the audience the BEST FOOD YOU EVER ATE. You will need to use PRECISE words to get your peers to want to eat this food...RIGHT AWAY!

The secret to success with this speech:

A VISUAL AIDE…let the audience SEE the food!
PRECISE words...use a dictionary or thesaurus...be creative!

Length of Speech: 5 minutes

How do you start?

The FIRST sense you eat with is your EYES. Therefore start your speech with what you see when you look at the food.

Descriptions using similes and metaphors are EXCELLENT!!

REMEMBER: Your food may be unfamiliar to a classmate, try to make analogies to similar foods to try to connect with the audience.

SECOND...what do you SMELL? Our sense of smell ignites that fire in our belly.

THIRD...Touch...do you eat this with your fingers or a fork? Therefore the sense of touch could start with your hands actually touching the food or describing use of utensils.

TASTE: What does this taste like when you eat it?

Day 3 How To and Health and Wellness Speech Details

NEW SPEECH DUE TOMORROW...GRADED!

“How To” Speech

Starting Thursday 1-8-15 you will present “How To…” Speeches to your classmates. Your speeches should be on a topic of interest to you. Time: 5-8 MINUTES

You do not need to turn in notes. You will be graded using the standard speech rubric.

You MUST make the presentation interactive. You are INFORMING your peers about a topic that is of interest to you.

Your procedures for HOT TO…. must be clearly communicated to your classmates. A HANDOUT with written instructions may be helpful to go along with your oral presentation. After all, some of us learn through listening, some reading, and some through doing. YOU are the TEACHER … everyone should be able to follow your steps.

You must tell me your topic in class today 1-7-15.

Reading your text pages 17-38 and 65-67 may help you with this presentation, and all speech presentations.

Ideas include but are not limited to:

How to pick out a breed of dog that is right for your family.
How to make salsa/other food item
How to tie a tie
How to draw something
How to make something (origami)

HEALTH and WELLNESS SPEECH Due Friday 1-9-15


Library Time...Let's use our time in the library on Wednesday and Thursday to research for the Health and Wellness Speech due Friday! The speech is a 5-7 minute speech about a health and wellness topic. You must pick your topic by TODAY 1-7-15.

THE GOAL: learn to discern between SCHOLARLY research and simple searches that are not adequate for academic work. Yes, ProQuest must be one of your sources. You are looking for CREDIBLE sources, ask me if you have questions about credibility.

THE END RESULT: You will find three articles about the same topic related to HEALTH and NUTRITION. You will active read the articles to find out what information the articles have in common. You will prepare a 5-7 minute speech to share your knowledge with your peers.

WHAT TOPICS COULD I RESEARCH?

16. Are antibacterial hand sanitizers all they are advertised to be?
17. How much sleep does the body need to recover and repair in preparation fr the next day? Does this amount of sleep change as one ages? What is the target amount of sleep for YOUR AGE GROUP?
18. What does it mean if a product is labeled ORGANIC? Why does it matter?
19. There are many choices when one goes into the grocery store to buy milk? What is the difference, nutritionally, between cow's milk (low fat...to vitamin D), Almond milk, Coconut Milk, and Soy Milk?
20. What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated fat? Which is the "better" fat?
21. What is the difference between butter and margarine? Which is better for our bodies?
22. What foods are on the Dirty Dozen list and the Clean Fifteen list? What is the purpose of the lists? How should the information impact the way we purchase food?
23. Many people have an allergy to peanuts. Explain the dietary restrictions for people with a peanut allergy.
24. With the rise in obesity, we need to make good choices when it comes to our diet. What are healthy choices we can make in fast food restaurants?

We started to decode a poem...understanding that we need to KNOW/UNDERSTAND what we say!!

2015 Speech Class DAY 1 Monday 1-5-15

Today we will listen to introductory speeches based on the family object you brought in from home.

We will also be given a speech book to read and take good care of for the month of January.

We will have 1 hour to research in the library. Almost every day we will have library research time. The library time is scheduled so that you can do research, better learn MLA format, and collaborate with peers. It is a time to get work done so you have less to do at home!

Each day come to class ready to present, ready to listen, and ready to enjoy your peers' company! We will learn speech techniques and learn about a variety of topics!

LIBRARY TIME:
Today we will spend an hour in the library. During that hour we will use the library resources to find articles about COURAGEOUS PEOPLE.

THE GOAL: learn to discern between SCHOLARLY research and simple searches that are not adequate for academic work.

THE END RESULT: You will define courage based on the dictionary definition and well as your interpretation of the term. You will find THREE articles about the person on ProQuest, CQ Researcher, or a scholarly website (a .edu or .gov). You will active read the articles to find out what information the articles have in common and what they teach you about the person. Remember each author has his or her own "angle". You will prepare a 5 minute speech to share your knowledge with your peers. Due...Wednesday 1-7-15.

Written Requirement: You will write a well-written paragraph in MLA format explaining reasons why this person is courageous. You will include a Works Cited Page in MLA format (see Purdue's OWL for assistance).
