Final Week

Monday of the Final Week we did our GROUP "Good Speeches" and gathered in the large group. After the large audience "performances" we enjoyed pizza, fruit, vegetables, and cookies.

Wednesday we had a guest speaker walk us through a TOASTMASTERS meeting.

Thursday we registered for classes.

The rest of the time we completed our remaining speeches.

Week 3 Speech

Monday was a day off

Tuesday we had library time to research and were given our GOOD SPEECH groups
Permission slips were collected
Pizza Letters were passed out...due THURSDAY 1-21

Wednesday after Mass we read poems using the MICROPHONE.
We had additional library time then continued to give speeches.

Thursday
Pizza money collected
Permission slips continue to be collected for RIPE tomorrow
The first hour we will be in the library.
Speeches will conclude:
HOW TO, BEST FOOD, COURAGE, HEALTH and WELLNESS
Videotaping will continue for personal PEP feedback

Friday 
Hour one in the library - our final hour to research/work together
Hour TWO - pseeches
Hours THREE and FOUR ... RIPE and Collaboration with Skills for Life Class.

Speech Day 6 and 7 Health and Wellness + Olympic Sports

We will have time in the library On Monday and Tuesday to begin researching for the next speeches. The visuals for THESE TWO SPEECHES MUST BE DONE USING PREZI (https://prezi.com/). Prezi is a FREE presentation software.

HEALTH and WELLNESS SPEECH DUE Wednesday 1-13-16
OLYMPIC SPORT SPEECH DUE Thursday 1-14-16 

TOPICS MUST BE CHOSEN BY MONDAY 1-11-10 at the end of the library time.


HEALTH and WELLNESS SPEECH

The speech is a 3-5 minute speech about a health and wellness topic.

THE GOAL: learn to discern between SCHOLARLY research and simple searches that are not adequate for academic work. Yes, ProQuest must be one of your sources (write down passwords while in the library). You are looking for CREDIBLE sources, ask me if you have questions about credibility.

THE END RESULT: You will find three articles about the same topic related to HEALTH and NUTRITION. You will active read the articles to find out what information the articles have in common. You will prepare a 3-5 minute speech to share your knowledge with your peers.

WRITTEN PORTION: You need 250 words in MLA format (In-Text citations and a Works Cited Page) with a beginning (includes a THESIS), middle, and an end. Upload the document to CANVAS before you give your speech (7 AM Speech day is the deadline)

VISUAL AID (PREZI): A minimum of 4 Prezi slides with NO MORE than 10 words per slide. A maximum of 10 Prezi slides. Slides ENHANCE your talk.

2. What is a gluten free diet and why must some people adhere to it?
3. What is a casein free diet and why must some people adhere to it?

8. What are the health benefits of eating breakfast.
9. What are the best options for post workout nutrition/hydration.
10. What is heat stroke? What steps can be taken to avoid heat stroke while exercising?
11. What are superfoods? Why are these foods considered superfoods?
12. What is the difference between natural sugars and refined sugar? Which is better for one to consume?
13. What foods are best to eat prior to a workout/game to prepare the body for competition?
14. Are energy drinks healthy choices? If so, what should you look for in the ingredients? If not, what is a healthier choice?
15. Explain the positive and negative effects of caffeine on the body.
16. What does the term GMO (genetically modified ingredients) mean to me? What are GMOs and where do they show up in our food? Are they good for us? Should we avoid them?
17. Are antibacterial hand sanitizers all they are advertised to be?
18. How much sleep does the body need to recover and repair in preparation fr the next day? Does this amount of sleep change as one ages? What is the target amount of sleep for YOUR AGE GROUP?
19. What does it mean if a product is labeled ORGANIC? Why does it matter? What does one have to do to get their products labeled organic?
20. There are many choices when one goes into the grocery store to buy milk? What is the difference, nutritionally, between cow's milk (low fat...to vitamin D), Almond milk, Coconut Milk, and Soy Milk?
21. What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated fat? Which is the "better" fat?
22. What is the difference between butter and margarine? Which is better for our bodies?
23. What foods are on the Dirty Dozen list and the Clean Fifteen list? What is the purpose of the lists? How should the information impact the way we purchase food?
24. Many people have an allergy to peanuts. Explain the dietary restrictions for people with a peanut allergy.
25. With the rise in obesity, we need to make good choices when it comes to our diet. What are healthy choices we can make in the grocery store in the "granola bar" aisle and in the "chips" aisle?
26. What is better as we age to keep our mind healthy: exercise or mentally stimulating activities like reading a book or learning a new skill? Explain how one can age gracefully and keep mentally clear.
27. What are the mental and physical benefits of exercise?
28. Organically grown fruits and vegetables are the best choice. If you MUST buy packaged fruits and vegetables why is it better to purchase FROZEN vs canned?


Olympic Sports Speech

The speech is a 3-5 minute speech about an OLYMPIC SPORT.

THE GOAL: Teach your class the rules of the sport, how one can earn a GOLD MEDAL as a participant in the sport, what one has to do to TRAIN for the sport, as well as safety concerns when participating in the sport. Help your peers UNDERSTAND the sport so they enjoy watching it even more! When researching, we will learn to discern between SCHOLARLY research and simple searches that are not adequate for academic work. Yes, ProQuest must be one of your sources (write down passwords while in the library). You are looking for CREDIBLE sources, ask me if you have questions about credibility.

THE END RESULT:  You will prepare a 3-5 minute speech to share your knowledge with your peers.

Speech Day 4 ... Courageous People

Today we will begin in the library and start the assignment below.  During our three remaining hours we will listen to Intro Speeches about FAMILY, How To speeches, and complete an activity based on the NAVIANCE paperwork.

LIBRARY TIME:
Thursday and Friday (1-7 and 1-8)  we will spend an hour in the library. During that hour we will use the library resources to find articles about COURAGEOUS PEOPLE.

THE GOAL: learn to discern between SCHOLARLY research and simple searches that are not adequate for academic work.

THE END RESULT: You will define courage based on the dictionary definition and well as your interpretation of the term. You will find THREE articles about the person on ProQuest, CQ Researcher, or a scholarly website (a .edu or .gov). You will active read the articles to find out what information the articles have in common and what they teach you about the person. Remember each author has his or her own "angle". You will prepare a 5 minute speech to share your knowledge with your peers. Due...Wednesday 1-7-15.

Written Requirement: You will write a well-written essay in MLA format explaining reasons why this person is courageous. You will include a Works Cited Page in MLA format (see Purdue's OWL for assistance).
Essay Guidelines: 250 words (list in parenthesis after last word), double spaced (this means about 1 page), and a minimum of three paragraphs...an intro, body, and conclusion.
Your Essay will have a thesis (a roadmap to keep your paper organized) in paragraph one. A sample thesis for this assignment would be:
______________ is a courageous person for the following reasons: (list them).
            (in the body paragraph(s) explain why he or she is courageous)
Grading Rubric for WRITTEN PORTION:

2016 Speech...DAY 3

Today our classroom time was spent:
1. Discussing Course Selection (Jan 28th)
2. Discussing being ACTIVE listeners...avoiding distractions
3. Discussed Public Speaking techniques used by the priest at Mass
4.  We watched a YOUTUBE video about "The Most Beautiful Thing" and discussed the most beautiful thing we ever experienced.
5. Listened to Intro Speeches and How To
6. Those that had not completed the NAVIANCE Learning Style Inventory in the library yesterday turned in the paperwork today.

Thursday and Friday we have one hour each day to research in the library!

Tuesday 1-5-16

Tuesday we will start the day in the library with the counselors showing us how to use NAVIANCE. What is not completed in class will be homework. Complete the surveys, print out the documents, and bring to class on Wednesday.

Today we will watch a video, complete a quick write, and discuss our ideas.

We will use our dictionaries and explore a document...we will analyze how MEANING is important for pronunciation.

We will all give our INTRODUCTION speech. Grades will be given ON PAPER but grades will not be put online for SPEECH 1 ... it is the practice speech.
